Manually Upgrading the Firmware on the Teenage Engineering OD-11
I’ve had issues upgrading my OD-11 Teenage Engineering speaker for around a year or so. The orthoplay app should detect the update and should prompt you, however for me this never happened. I’d bought a second one running a much newer version but still out of date. I managed to update the original one manually a while ago, but forgot the process. After following the wrong procedure (config mode) on the teenage engineering support site, I found the correct process, so I’m documenting the process here.
If your OD-11 fails to update through the normal process or won’t boot correctly, you can manually install firmware using the built-in Recovery Mode.
Steps for Manual Update⌗
-
Download the firmware
From the OD-11 technical guide, download the latest.binfirmware file. -
Unplug the speaker
Disconnect the OD-11 from power. -
Enter recovery mode
Hold both the “–” (minus) and “+” (plus) buttons while plugging the power cable back in.
Continue holding until the LED turns yellow, then release the buttons. -
Connect to the OD-11 Recovery network
The speaker will create a Wi-Fi network namedOD-11 Recovery XXXX.
Connect to it from your computer. -
Open the recovery page
In your browser, go to:
http://192.168.16.1/ -
Upload the firmware
In the web interface, choose the.binfirmware file you downloaded and confirm the upload.
The speaker will begin flashing the firmware. -
Wait for reboot
When complete, the OD-11 will reboot automatically.
Once the LED changes, you can proceed to reconfigure the speaker as normal.
