I’ve had issues upgrading my OD-11 Teenage Engineering speaker for around a year or so. The orthoplay app should detect the update and should prompt you, however for me this never happened. I’d bought a second one running a much newer version but still out of date. I managed to update the original one manually a while ago, but forgot the process. After following the wrong procedure (config mode) on the teenage engineering support site, I found the correct process, so I’m documenting the process here.

If your OD-11 fails to update through the normal process or won’t boot correctly, you can manually install firmware using the built-in Recovery Mode.

Steps for Manual Update

  1. Download the firmware
From the OD-11 technical guide, download the latest .bin firmware file.

  2. Unplug the speaker
    Disconnect the OD-11 from power.

  3. Enter recovery mode
Hold both the “–” (minus) and “+” (plus) buttons while plugging the power cable back in.
Continue holding until the LED turns yellow, then release the buttons.

  4. Connect to the OD-11 Recovery network
The speaker will create a Wi-Fi network named OD-11 Recovery XXXX.
Connect to it from your computer.

  5. Open the recovery page
    In your browser, go to:
    http://192.168.16.1/

  6. Upload the firmware
In the web interface, choose the .bin firmware file you downloaded and confirm the upload.
The speaker will begin flashing the firmware.

  7. Wait for reboot
When complete, the OD-11 will reboot automatically.
Once the LED changes, you can proceed to reconfigure the speaker as normal.

After updating

Once your speaker is up and running here is something heavy to play on it:
